Amazake: the sweet stuff!

One of last Wednesday night's adult students came to class carrying a kettle in plastic bag. She had made some "amazake" and brought some to class for everyone to drink.

I was really happy because I love "amazake". It is a traditional Japanese drink that is made from fermented rice. Although it is fermented it doesn't produce much alcohol so you can drink as much as you want without ever getting tipsy.

Japanese people think that it is a sweet drink, but being from America where so much sugar is put into everything, it only seems slightly sweet to me. The students were a little surprised that I like it, but I do tend to like all the food stuff that are made out of rice.

"Amazake" is usually connected to traditional events and since it was cherry blossom viewing season I said that we need a cherry tree in the classroom. One of the students whipped out her smart phone and got a picture of a cherry tree on it, set it up on the table and said "Well , see, we do have one!"

To make this happy night even more happier, one of the students was absent so I ended up getting two mugs of this great drink!
